So here's another big ass chunk of music. For the most part, it's a lot of "Blah!" 1972-ish is a shitty time for music. I'm guessing everyone's nodded off on brown horse and making crap records. There are a few highlights though, so here they are.
Enjoy!
0238 Harry Nilsson – Nilsson Schmilsson - I was looking forward to this one, and wasn't disappointed. Nilsson wrote a bunch of my beloved Monkees best songs, and this was a great mix of tracks, and he has a fine voice. Makes you wonder why he wasn't an artists himself sooner, I guess his looks...
0239 T.Rex – Electric Warrior - It's easy to think of glam rock as a throw away genre, but this album is solid with a lots of heart. "I've Been Dancing" is a great track.
0240 David Bowie – Hunky Dory - Bowie comes into his own with this one, and all is right in the world.
0241 Randy Newman – Sail Away - Newman never could sing, but these tracks are all pretty good, incredibly sarcastic, looks at life and love.
0242 Deep Purple – Machine Head - "Smoke On the Water" is on here, so the rest is kind of a nice bonus.
0243 Big Star – # 1 Record - Should of been a #1 record. Teenage waste perfected.
0244 Black Sabbath – Vol 4 - A good Sabbath album where they are exploring different song directions, but oddly forgettable.
0245 Steely Dan – Can’t Buy a Thrill - Nope, I still don't like Steely Dan.
0246 Neil Young – Harvest - Neils big hit is one I've always liked, but don't love.
0247 Curtis Mayfield – Superfly: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - An awesome blast of preachy soul that's been sampled to death by hip hop. I never did see the movie, but I've loved this album for years, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
0248 Slade – Slayed? - Rather forgettable glam rock.
0249 Deep Purple – Made in Japan - I started off really liking the crunch on this, but then it entered extended solo land and lost me.
0250 Yes – Close to the Edge - More shit squeezed from the Yes asshole.
0251 Lou Reed – Transformer - This is the album that put Lou over, and it is a damned fine one. I could go with less tuba though.
0252 Hugh Masekela – Home is Where the Music Is - His early stuff is rocking African jazz, but this is boring African jazz.
0253 Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges – Clube da Esquina (1972) - More Latin type stuff that just blurred together.
0254 Todd Rundgren – Something/Anything - I believe he did pretty much all the playing and producing on this, to bad it's lame 70's soft rock.
0255 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – Will the Circle Be Unbroken? This is a pretty amazing album where classic traditional artists like Mother Maybelle Carter join the band.A great time capsule of a mostly lost music form.
0256 Stevie Wonder – Talking Book - Some consider this era to be Wonder's best, but I've never cared for it. Still don't.
0257 Stephen Stills – Manassas - Some great blues rock is saddled by some lame CSN style slow songs that ruin this from being great.
0258 T.Rex – Slider - Not as good as "Electric Warrior", at all.
0259 David Ackles – American Gothic - Pretty standard folk album.
0260 Eagles – Eagles (1st Album) - It's better then "Hotel California" and they actually show some balls. Still can't stand them though.
0261 Tim Buckley – Greetings from LA - Another "not as good as his first album" album.
0262 Nick Drake – Pink Moon - The last Nick Drake album comes off kind of unfinished and not as good as the others.
0263 Paul Simon – Paul Simon (1972) - Doesn't stray to far from Simon & Garfunkle, which is a very good thing.
0264 Roxy Music – Roxy Music (1st Album) - I'm not a Bryan Ferry fan, but this is actually quite good. Big, bold glam rock.
0265 Alice Cooper – School’s Out - Surprisingly straight forward considering how over the top Cooper is. Which means it's fun and decent.
0266 The Temptations – All Directions - The Temps go balls out on this one, in ALL DIRECTIONS! Get it? It's good.
0267 David Bowie – Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - If Bowie did nothing else in the world, he'd still be remembered for this one. It's a fantastic album with no low points. Listen to it!
0268 War – World is a Ghetto - Funky political commentary, but a bit unfocused so I lost interest.
0269 Al Green – Let’s Stay Together - Al Green can fuck your ears like no other, check it out.
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
ReplyDeleteWarm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light...
I haven't got to that one yet! :P
ReplyDeleteI haven't noticed any ABBA yet, were they in the top 50?
ReplyDeleteIt goes by year of release, so the "Number One" on this list isn't actually the number on e record quality wise. It's "1001 Albums you Should Hear Before You Die", as opposed to the "Top 500 Albums Of All Time" where they are rated with number one being "Sgt. Peppers", number two "Pet Sounds", etc.
ReplyDeleteSo expect Abba to start showing up around 1977 or so I'd suspect. Damn it! (I never warmed to them... :P )
